TBS Star Claud Mann cooks with HerShe

HerShe mentor & volunteer, Debra MacCulloch, offered her friend’s gorgeous mansion in Ojai, California for HerShe to host its Fall Performing Arts Camp. She also asked TV star chef and friend, Claud Mann of “Dinner & a Movie” (TBS) to provide a cooking experience for the girls. Claud taught the girls how to prepare, cook and present food that looks beautiful and tastes delicious. The girls beamed with excitement as they cut, diced, tasted, smelled, and experimented with herbs, spices, meats, vegetables and cooking techniques.

During the mini-camp, the girls also participated in an intense performing arts curriculum taught by world-renown artist, Karen Clark-Green who flew in from Youngstown, Ohio to lead the sessions. She also recruited well-known dancer, Sam Peete, to give the girls a class in hip-hop. Mr. Norwood, father of the singer, Brandy, also came by to support the girls and their own artistry.

Through an intense summer camp held at Pepperdine University and four (4) mini-camps throughout the year held at different mansions and estates, the girls use these opportunities to come together and experience what it is to be in a sisterhood — while maturing into the women that God has called them to be.

America's Next Top Model ???

A friend of mine was producing a fashion show segment in "The World Performing Arts Championships" last weekend. I was asked to help out with dressing all the models. I took along my mentee Ashley, because of her expressed interest in modeling. She said, everyone tells her that she should be a model. I allowed her backstage to watch the female models rehearse, go thru hair & makeup and to watch me dress them in these incredibly gorgeous gowns. It was feverishly hectic, hurried, and stressful. After awhile, she opted not be in the mix and to watch the show from the audience instead. The bikini competition was fierce, but it was a 6ft. thin chocolate goddess from Jamaica with a buzz cut, who beat out all the others. Ash was excited and really enjoyed seeing it all come together. After the show, my friend offered to Ashley an agent right away to start doing commercials. I said, "whoa... that's too much too soon","We're going to take a year to work on her beauty inside before we focus on the beauty outside." I also want to make sure it's what Ashley really wants to do and not what others think she should do. We also took in some horsebackriding for real, for real, and swimming. She laughed and smiled alot. Sometimes when I look at that beautiful face, I see such sadness behind those eyes and I feel for her.

Sparks Game - Aug 7th

Hi All,

I had fun at the Sparks game last Tuesday even though they lost 96-93 to Phoenix. It's always fun seeing the mentees and mentors, too. :-). Miss Phaebra - Thanks for getting the tickets and meal vouchers.

God Bless - Navella

HerShe Mentors are the BEST!!!!

Hello Mentors,
I hope you know what an incredible group of women you are! The HerShe name is the combination of the two feminine pronouns that powerfully communicate our identity as a bonded community of women and girls. When I look at this picture, I see a group of amazing women who have come together for the benefit of very special young girls who happen to be in foster care. I am truly grateful for your participation and look forward to the amazing girl power as it is unleashed in this city of Los Angeles and beyond!

Please use this post to communicate with each other and with the organization. Also, you can easily post and share information about your experience with your new mentee. It would be awesome if every mentor could contribute one post a month (or more!).

Look forward to seeing you this Saturday at your mentor training.

Best,

Kenadie
